Stephany • Miami roots, electronic music and a passion for the turntables.
“DJ Dakota” (Stephany) was born and raised in Coral Gables, Florida. Music runs in her family: her father was a musician, her grandmother was an opera singer, and her great-grandmother was a music teacher.
As music grew to be her passion, DJing began as a hobby in 1988 while she was attending Florida International University. She responded to an advertisement on the Student Bulletin Board for disc jockeys at FIU’s radio station. She continued on the university radio circuit in Florida, including Florida State University’s WVFS, “The Voice of Florida State,” and Rollins College’s WPRK as she finished college. Along the way, she built her 12-inch vinyl collection and eventually acquired her Technics 1200s.
After graduating, Dakota backpacked through seven countries in Europe and the United Kingdom, an experience that sealed her passion for electronic dance music. Her club appearances and weekly sets began in Miami in the mid-1990s, playing Acid Jazz at Sticky Fingers in Coconut Grove and Techno-House at GrooveJet, Liquid and The Marlin.
In addition to sending her mixtapes and CDs around the world, Dakota supports the Winter Music Conference each year on Miami Beach. Her television work includes DJing live on Telemundo’s “The Roof’s No Cover,” with the likes of Paul van Dyk and Tiësto, and appearing as “DJ Dakota,” also known as Stephany, in “Single in South Beach” on the Women’s Entertainment network.
Her residencies have included Satine Lounge at the Westin Diplomat Resort in Hollywood, Florida, and H2O in West Palm Beach. Between traveling and filming, she spins guest DJ sets and private parties throughout South Florida.
Her website, dakotashouse.com, receives CD requests from around the world, including England, Australia, Ghana, Macedonia and Pakistan. Between DJing and maintaining the site, she spends time in the studio learning to make her own music.
DJ Dakota is living her passion and loving it. She’s working on a tour that will take her throughout the United States, England, Germany and Spain. Stay tuned for travel dates, events and new CDs—and get ready to hear her Miami sound at Ziggy’s Bar & Grill.
Her message to supporters: “Thanks for your support and always Feel The Music!”
